Our journey through life is punctuated by daily decisions we make. There is a significant difference between making a decision and sustaining it.
Many of us have made a decision to embark on a personal growth journey. We have experienced moments of clarity as a result. We know what is important to us and what we need to change. We have defined our values and have established them as our non-negotiables. From this clarity, we then commit ourselves to living differently.
But sometimes life happens. An unexpected opportunity, a demanding season, some financial pressures, a fear of missing out, or a desire to keep the peace. All these challenge our good intentions.
The course of our lives is rarely determined by our intentions, but by our ability to remain committed to them. Living differently requires daily honouring of the decisions we make.
The Gap Between Decision and Devotion
Making a decision is an event and living that decision is a practice. This is where trust becomes essential. This is not the trust that everything will work out exactly as planned. It is the trust that remaining faithful to what matters most will ultimately serve us better than abandoning ourselves for short-term relief when life happens. Authenticity is not forged in moments of inspiration, it is proven in moments of temptation.
Every Commitment Is Eventually Tested
Life has a way of asking difficult questions. When we encounter these questions, we find ourselves at a crossroads.
Sometimes we are asked:
- Will you still protect your wellbeing when your schedule becomes overwhelming?
- Will you still choose integrity when compromise appears more rewarding?
- Will you still honour your values when nobody would notice if you didn’t?
These moments are not interruptions to authentic living. They are the authentic living, because values only become meaningful when they influence our decisions under pressure.
Learning to Trust the Person You Are Becoming
When we think about trust, we often think about trusting other people. Today perhaps the more important question is: Can you trust yourself?
- Can you trust yourself to remain aligned with the commitments you have made?
- Can you trust yourself not to abandon your future for the comfort of the present?
This kind of trust is built through consistency. Every time you honour one of your values, even when it is inconvenient, you gather evidence. Evidence that you are becoming someone who can be relied upon. Not only by others, but by yourself too.
Self-trust does not suddenly appear, it grows steadily. Choice after choice, conversation after conversation, decision after decision, and day by day. Every day gives us another opportunity to strengthen it through faithful actions.
Becoming Steady
Perhaps the greatest gift of authenticity is steadiness. The ability to remain anchored when circumstances change:
- To know what matters, and honour it consistently.
- To become less reactive to the opinions, expectations, and pressures around you because your life is increasingly directed from within.
Steadiness is what allows authenticity to be sustained. It transforms values into character, intentions into habits, and principles into a way of life.
A Moment of Recalibration
Authenticity is rarely lost in one dramatic decision. More often, it is shaped or eroded through the small choices we make when no one is watching and when life becomes demanding.
Pause:
Before you move on with your day, pause for a moment and ask yourself:
What commitment to myself has life been testing recently?
Don’t rush to answer. Sit with the question. Notice what immediately comes to mind.
Practice:
And then ask:
What would it look like to remain faithful to that commitment consistently?
Because authenticity is not established the day you decide who you want to be. It is established every day you choose to become that person again.
PS. Until next month, may you continue to heal what no longer serves you, grow into who you are becoming, and build a life that reflects your truest self.
